Clemson Engineers for Developing Communities (CEDC)

Aquaculture in Haiti

About CEDC & Aquaculture

CEDC is a service-oriented and student-lead program at Clemson University that operates under a corporate organizational structure. Students work on a group that tackles a specific issue and there are various projects that occur each semester. For the Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 semesters, I participated in Aquaculture project group while I was the Project Manager of Aquaculture-Business Implementation in the Fall 2023 semester. The overall goal of Aquaculture is to produce a low-cost tilapia feed in the Central Plateau of Haiti that will stimulate aquaculture production by using Haitian resources. Aquaculture times to improve the productive capacity of aquaculture farming while reinvesting in the Haitian economy and improve access to healthy food.

Group Member of Aquaculture

The Aquaculture Project aims to provide the potential for a sustainable production of tilapia food that is produced and sold in Haiti. My role on the project is with facilitating communications between our partners in Haiti and the team in Clemson by providing French and English translations in our Zoom meeting, WhatsApp group-chats, and emails. I also helped to give presentations about the project as well as present posters at the end of the year poster presentation called Summit.

Fall 2023

Project Manager of Aquaculture--Business Implementation

Aquaculture-Business Implementation project aims to reinvest in the Haitian economy through the creation of a Haitian owned and operated tilapia feed business. The goal is to increase the productive capacity of aquaculture ponds as they are forced to underproduce as a result of the high cost of tilapia feed, which over half the cost is attributed to shipping from the United States alone. My role is to lead a team in the creation and implementation of this project through directing weekly meetings, meeting with partners, and presenting at Aquaculture events, including fundraising events. This semester, we are working to create a Market Research Report as well as Production Research. Market Research Report is focused more on the pricing of the feed to the availability of the ingredients in Haiti while the Production Research is more focused on the day-to-day activities from the layout of the room to the logo. From this information, we can create a Trial Implementation Plan to be prepared for Phase 1 Operations, where the goal is examine the quality of the feed and how well it does on the market. At the end of the semester, I will create a poster to present at CEDC's end of semester event called Summit.
